Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
